Performance of Social Networking Sites – Index from Keynote Systems for January 2014

    March 03, 2014 | NMK

On average, the response time was quicker by 0.24 seconds, down from 2.17 seconds in December to 1.93 seconds in January. This is particularly significant because it means that the social media network homepages’ average response time is below the Keynote recommended maximum of two seconds. In terms of availability – the chances of a site loading correctly when visited – the sites continued to perform well, as was the case in December, only one site fell below the 99 percent successful load rate minimum. What’s more, the site which suffered the worst availability score – LinkedIn – had increased its successful load rate from 98.27 percent in December to 98.99 percent in January, and so in fact only marginally missed the 99 percent benchmark.

Unsurprisingly, the Christmas period is vital for online retailers; fail to take it seriously and you can easily slip from liquidity to insolvency in the blink of an eye. But it doesn’t end the second the wrapping paper hits the floor. The post-Christmas sales aren’t just an opportunity for retailers to give a little back with some hearty reductions; they exist to stimulate demand during what would otherwise be an incredibly fallow retail period. And, given it’s a time of tightened belts, every day really does count.

Mobile App Performance Management: Think from a Device Perspective

    November 18, 2013 | Digital Marketing Magazine

As mobile increasingly becomes the ‘go-to’ device for internet access, it is essential that businesses ensure mobile apps offer the best experience possible to customers. On the whole, mobile quality assurance consists of performance and functional testing. For example, some insight into customer experience can be gained through web application performance monitoring – which looks at how pages load following a user request – but this isn’t the whole story. Mobile is a diverse sector, with huge variation between device capabilities and in the relationship applications have with each device. If these differences aren’t considered as part of the performance measurement, they could have a detrimental effect on user experience.

Pressure to Perform: A Closer Look at Web Performance Metrics

    May 24, 2013 | VB

New technology allows us to take an even closer look at the impact of Web performance on the desktop user experience. Rather than simply measuring the time it takes for the entire page to load, new standards allow us to capture details about how long it takes for the visitor to see something change in the browser and how long before a visitor can begin to interact with a page. These are important points in the user experience, which mean that not all load times are equal. Let us explain.

Ten years ago credit cards were a paper-based business. Cards were marketed through the post, consumers applied with paper applications, paper statements arrived every month and paper cheques were written to pay the bill. Today, credit card issuers still post billions of pre-approved offers every year, but increasingly – even if an initial offer is received by snail-mail – credit card applications are being submitted online. Furthermore, once an account is opened, the card holder is likely to manage that account on the issuer’s website.

The Effect of Third Party Content on Performance

    April 02, 2013 | Wireless Week

A big challenge today for any site operator is getting their proverbial arms around third party plugins or links, with services such as Google Analytics, Adobe Omniture or social media sites and other APIs or widgets. While you want or even need to incorporate them into a high quality site they present a challenge in that the operator has no real control over how they perform. As a result, they can sometimes drag performance down without the owner having any real recourse. As with most development challenges, this is exacerbated on mobile devices where it takes very little for download speed to be impacted. Add to this the need for news sites to offer clear, up to the minute content and you can see the challenges increase even more.
