Obamacare Launch Provides Mission-Critical Lessons for Optimizing Web Sites; Accurate Load Testing Critical Says Keynote
"Lean Load Testing" is a Required Best Practice for Helping Web Teams Anticipate and Respond to High-Volume Traffic Events
VELOCITY CONFERENCE - NEW YORK, NY - October 15, 2013 – The national media's focus on the many technical problems plaguing the Affordable Care Act (ACA) sites, including HealthCare.gov, is a reminder of just how important it is for Web teams to plan for and quickly respond to high volumes of online traffic.
Keynote helps customers implement "Lean Load Testing," a powerful, cost-effective and easy-to-use cross-industry solution allowing site operators to prepare for major launch events and correct Web performance accordingly. Accurate and representative load testing is one of the top challenges IT and Web operations teams face across industries including retail, banking, media and travel & hospitality.

Keynote load testing customers use deep analysis of historical user behavior to perform comprehensive load tests simulating a range of user behavior and scenarios. In the case of ACA sites they had limited traffic history, but were able to anticipate traffic to the home page using demographic and other forecasting data. However, it appears the government vastly underestimated the number of site visitors leading to many of the problems we've been hearing about.
According to Keynote data the "front door" (as opposed to the transactional journey, enrolling and checking out available plans) of HealthCare.gov and many other state-run ACA exchange sites scored fairly well. In aggregate, Keynote saw an average user experience of 3.21 seconds page load time or 97.7% availability. However, getting beyond the homepage is where most problems began for many people.
Rapid re-testing of a site with real Internet traffic (load testing) is a best practice that can be challenging, requiring expensive equipment, consultants and complex scripting set-up which often takes days or even weeks. Even once this is done the analysis of results can take time. That's where "lean" operational practices come in. Lean Load Testing with Keynote's Test Perspective solutionis used to perform quick "rinse and repeat" stability testing, offering spot-checks of scalability for any organization anticipating high traffic events — whether a nationwide healthcare enrollment or the holiday shopping season.
Keynote Test Perspective is an extremely cost-effective, easy-to-use, on-demand cloud-based Web loading testing service allowing IT operations teams to run load tests fast due to the minimal set-up required. Keynote Test Perspective also leverages KITE, the company's free tool for recording website monitoring scripts, allowing for the easy integration of load testing into existing production practices.
