SAN MATEO, California — October 1, 2002 — Keynote Systems (Nasdaq:KEYN) announced today that Qwest (NYSE: Q) and North Carolina State University have deployed Keynote Custom Perspective™, a family of measurement appliances that can be installed quickly and easily behind the firewall and allows e-businesses to manage the end-to-end performance of their Web-based applications from the end user perspective.

"Qwest has built its Service Level Agreement (SLA) around Keynote data because Keynote is highly respected for the integrity of the data it collects. We are using Keynote Backbone Agents within our network to specifically model how well our network interacts with the other large IP backbones out there," said Martin Capurro, director for dedicated Internet product management for Qwest Communications International.

"We have Keynote Backbone Agents within our network that interact with Keynote agents located across the Internet in general," continued Capurro. "This provides the basis of our off-net SLA, as well as providing Qwest with unique views to trouble-shoot across networks. Using Keynote measurement computers and data this way helps us anticipate network performance issues that would normally have been solved very reactively."

Custom Perspective is part of Keynote's Enterprise Perspective™ family of services designed to help customers correlate performance inside and outside the firewall, understand how internal device failures affect end user performance, and monitor end-to-end performance data from a single console and is a key element of Keynote's "Total Performance Management" strategy for benchmarking, testing and managing the end-to-end performance of e-business applications and systems.

"The Information Technology Division of North Carolina State University supports the entire academic computing environment for the university providing all the file space for students, the applications and the technology for the labs. We are, as well, the ISP for the university running the primary e-mail servers on campus as well as the primary Web servers," said Harry Nicholos, assistant director for Unix and Web services, Information Technology Division, North Carolina State University. "Accurate data is the hallmark of academic research so it was natural for us to turn to Keynote to get accurate, independent data about the performance of our Web applications. We have written into our service level objectives to upper management that the availabilities of our university home page and our online courses will exceed the Keynote Business 40 Internet Performance Index."

"We are using Keynote Custom Perspective along with data from Keynote's public measurement computers to correlate inside and outside data to get a really good picture of how the commercial Internet is working, whether or not we have a gateway problem, and how our own sites are performing."

When coupled with Keynote's comprehensive global measurement benchmarking and load testing services for companies doing business on the Internet, Custom Perspective provides e-business Web sites with the diagnostic firepower necessary to quickly troubleshoot performance bottlenecks from end-to-end across the network, both inside and outside the firewall.

With strategically placed Keynote measurement agents, customers understand performance from virtually any "connected" location within their corporate network, from locations around the Internet and within the data center where the application is hosted.

When Keynote Enterprise Agents are placed inside the firewall, customers obtain measurement data, which is consistent with that from outside the firewall, enabling accurate correlation and comparison of Web performance information. With apples to apples metrics customers minimize operational costs associated with problem investigation, improve the customer experience, ensure that service level commitments are being met and reduce downtime through high frequency monitoring and notification.

Keynote enterprise customers choose Custom Perspective for a variety of reasons including:

  • Measuring from external POPs not in Keynote's infrastructure
  • Comparing external vs. internal measurements for triage and diagnosis
  • Baselining site or application performance without the "Internet influence"
  • Data center SLA performance validation and reporting
  • Measurement of supply chain applications
  • Measure performance of retail "kiosk" application performance
  • Customer specific requirements such as plug-ins, digital certificate support, transactions over dialup connectivity

How Custom Perspective Works

Custom Perspective is a turnkey, outsourced service. It can be configured and deployed to measure performance anywhere on the Internet, or an intranet and extranet, including private networks and behind corporate firewalls and provides the same independent, third-party analysis, which is the hallmark of Keynote, to verify that e-business partners are operating at an agreed-upon level of service and performance. Companies wishing to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of their VPNs can use Custom Perspective to obtain in-depth, easy-to-read performance reports, a configurable alarm notification service, and a browser-based application interface.

Keynote can place private measurement computers anywhere, whether inside the firewall on internal networks and VPNs, or in any location on the Internet not currently measured by Keynote, in order to efficiently and securely obtain private measurement data affecting the performance of a customer's networks.

Customers have the option of three different types of Custom Perspective Agents each with its own unique purpose:

  • Backbone Agents are situated in locations of public Internet backbones or co-location facilities that are not part of Keynote's public infrastructure
  • Enterprise Agents are located in customer premises on an Intranet and are behind a corporate firewall. They are placed wherever a customer requires measurements from non-Keynote locations, including measurements from a data center, VPN or publicly accessible customer premises
  • Custom Agents are individually developed and used for measuring customer-specific, or non-standard, technologies aside from standard Web technologies such as HTTP

Pricing and Availability

Keynote Custom Perspective is generally available with customized base pricing starting at $2500 per month.
