Keynote Systems has been monitoring the effect on the Internet and Web of the "MSBlast" worm (also known as W32/Lovsan or W32.Blaster) from major metropolitan areas worldwide since the first reports surfaced of the worm's appearance.
The worm is designed to attack the Microsoft Web site http://windowsupdate.com starting at midnight local time on August 16 (effects of the attack will hit Australia first beginning 7:00 AM pacific daylight time on Friday, August 15).
Lloyd Taylor, Keynote's vice president of technology, believes that overall Internet performance outside of the United States (especially Australia, AsiaPac, parts of Europe), may potentially be negatively impacted once the Blaster Worm begins its denial of service attack against the windowupdate.com Web site beginning Friday morning, August 15.
As of 6:00 pm PDT August 13, there were no notable impacts on Internet backbones. The current status of the Internet backbones in the U.S. can always be seen at http://www.internethealthreport.com. It has not shown any problems thus far.
Note to broadcast media: Visuals will be provided in the Keynote "war room" (at our HQ building in San Mateo, Calif.), as we track this unfolding Web event, including graphic displays of real time Internet performance from 50 cities around the world.
Keynote Systems will continue to provide 24x7 monitoring and reporting on the situation as it evolves and through the upcoming weekend.
