SAN MATEO, CA — August 22, 2003 — The SoBig.F virus expected to attack around the world beginning at 12:00 pm PDT, has had little effect on Internet performance so far, reports Keynote Systems (Nasdaq: KEYN), The Internet Performance Authority®. Keynote is measuring the real-time effects of the worm’s progress across the Internet from the end user perspective, leveraging its global network of measurement computers. Keynote executives are available for interviews and updates throughout the weekend.
The Following Statements May be Attributed to Keynote Executives:
“As of 1:00 pm PDT, the SoBig.F virus has not caused any notable problems on the world's Internet backbones. The Keynote Systems Internet Health Report (http://www.internethealthreport.com) doesn't show any unusual problems on the major U.S. Internet backbones, and Keynote indices for Asia/Pacific and for Europe do not show any unusual problems. There may be isolated congestion within enterprises and local Internet Service Providers, but the major backbones and their interconnections are working normally.”
Eric Siegel
Principal Internet Consultant
Keynote Systems, Inc.
“What we have seen so far today is in contrast to the situation seen with the "SQL Slammer Worm" (also called "SQL-Hell") that was released into the Internet on January 25, 2003. It rapidly caused so much Internet backbone congestion that Keynote saw the download time of major Internet Web sites slowed by 50% or more and saw availability of some of those sites drop approximately 10%.”
“SQL Slammer was a very different type of program, however. All of its effort was directed towards generating as much network traffic as possible. In contrast, the SoBig.F virus is not designed to generate network traffic; it generates traffic as a side-effect of its attempt to infect machines and install virus software on them. The SoBig.F virus writer isn't trying to congest the Internet; he or she is trying to install rogue software on PCs to accomplish some as-yet unknown purpose.”
