Keynote Announces the World’s First Mobile Web Performance Index

  • Mobile Index Provides Accurate, Objective Data to Rank the Performance and Availability of 10 Popular U.S. Mobile Web Sites, Providing Insight Into End Users’ Experience
  • More Than 26,000 Measurements Across 4 Geographies and 4 Carriers Creates a Weekly Mobile Performance Index Customers Can Use to Benchmark Themselves Against the Competition

CTIA, SAN FRANCISCO, — October 23, 2007 — Keynote Competitive Research, the industry analysis group of Keynote Systems (Nasdaq: KEYN), today announced the world’s first performance index for the mobile Web. The Keynote Mobile Index is a weekly performance ranking of 10 popular U.S. mobile sites compiled from measurements taken on multiple carriers from different geographical locations. The company also announced it will be launching a similar European index in the coming weeks. The Keynote Mobile Index provides insight into the overall performance and availability of the mobile Web and can be leveraged by customers to benchmark their mobile performance against the biggest names in the industry.

“As the mobile Web increasingly becomes a part of consumers’ everyday lives, companies making a play in the mobile space need to provide an ideal mobile experience for end users in order to thrive,” said Umang Gupta, chairman and CEO of Keynote. “Sites need to be responsive and fast. With our mobile indices, companies can see exactly how they stack up against competition and the industry will have an unbiased performance assessment. We believe our new mobile performance indices will hasten the improvement of the mobile experience so Web adoption via wireless devices will flourish.”

In order to collect this data, Keynote will leverage its newly available on-demand mobile test & measurement network, which was also announced today, to measure the response time and availability of the U.S. mobile sites of ABC News (NYSE: DIS), AOL (NYSE: AOL), CNN (NYSE: TWX), ESPN, Facebook, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), MapQuest, MSN (Nasdaq: MSFT), The Weather Channel and Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO).

Customers committed to the mobile experience can also use Keynote’s newest offering to optimize the performance of their mobile Web site, understand their end users’ experience and benefit from competitive intelligence to benchmark service quality performance against market leaders through regular competitive monitoring. Customers will be able to purchase detailed information through their personalized MyKeynote portal and drill down on each measurement by carrier and location.

Availability and Pricing

The first U.S. mobile index will be available November 6, 2007. Companies committed to the mobile experience can set up customized measurements to benchmark themselves against competitors and gain access to valuable market data for $500 per measurement per location and modem.

Methodology

The Keynote Mobile Index, U.S. (KM10 – U.S.), is the competitive performance index for 10 of the most widely known U.S. mobile Web sites today. Keynote’s KM10 measures the responsiveness and availability of these sites. To ensure that the indices are independent of variables introduced in mobile devices, all measurements are made using the same modem emulating the same device for each carrier. Motorola RAZR V3, being the most popular device in the U.S., is emulated by all the modems to take measurements. Nokia N70, being the most popular device in Europe, is emulated by all the modems in Europe that take measurements. Measurements are taken from four locations in North America – New York, Dallas, Chicago and San Francisco – and five locations in Europe – Nuremberg, London, Paris, Stockholm and Amsterdam.

The KM10 measurements include single page downloads of the mobile sites from each location. Each modem takes one measurement for each site every hour across all locations. All U.S. locations download the same list of sites in the KM10–U.S. index. All European locations will have another list of mobile sites giving a KM10–EU index. As a result, for every site in the U.S., there are 24 measurements every day times four carriers times four locations.

At the end of every week, all the measurements for each mobile site are aggregated across all locations and all carriers to give a unique value for that week. The mobile sites are ranked in terms of performance and the index is posted on the Keynote Web site. Keynote also publishes an Industry Index which is the aggregated value across all mobile sites, all locations and all carriers.
