Keynote Systems Announces the Results of the World’s First Mobile Web Performance Index

  • Index Ranks 10 Most Popular U.S. Mobile Web Sites’ Response Time, Download Speed and Success Rate
  • Results Show Companies Often Lead in One Category and Falter in Others, Highlighting the Struggle to Perfect the Mobile Experience for End Users

SAN MATEO, Calif., — November 29, 2007 — Keynote Competitive Research, the industry analysis group of Keynote Systems (Nasdaq: KEYN), today announced the opening results of its weekly mobile Web performance index, the first index to measure and rank the response time, download speed and success rate of mobile Web sites. The results, which provide insight into the performance of the sites from Nov. 19 (12 am GMT) to Nov. 26 (12 am GMT), show that leading companies are still perfecting their mobile offerings’ performance; for example, Google led in response time, but placed in the bottom half for download speed.

“Interestingly, not only are we seeing sites leading in one area and trailing in the other, but in our preliminary data we also noticed the sites are evolving, with regular changes in their response times, availability and success rates,” said Manny Gonzalez, senior director of mobile technologies at Keynote. “Clearly, companies are still struggling to perfect their mobile offerings. I believe this index will be a valuable tool for the industry overall and those committed to improving their mobile sites and, in turn, the end users’ experience.”

The results of the mobile Web performance index, which measures the U.S. mobile sites of CNN (NYSE: TWX), ESPN, Facebook, Fandango, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), MapQuest, MSN (Nasdaq: MSFT), Schwab (NASDAQ: SCHW), The Weather Channel and Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO), can be found every Wednesday at www.keynote.com/keynote_competitive_research/performance_indices/mobile/us_index.html.

Companies committed to the mobile experience can set up customized measurements around the index to benchmark themselves against competitors and gain access to valuable market data for $500 per measurement per location and modem.

Methodology

The Keynote Mobile Index, U.S. (KM10 – U.S.), is the competitive performance index for 10 of the most widely known U.S. mobile Web sites today. Keynote’s KM10 measures the responsiveness and availability of these sites. To ensure that the indices are independent of variables introduced in mobile devices, all measurements are made using the same modem emulating the same device for each carrier. Motorola RAZR V3, being the most popular device in the U.S., is emulated by all the modems to take measurements. Measurements are taken from four locations in North America – New York, Dallas, Chicago and San Francisco.

The KM10 measurements include single page downloads of the mobile sites from each location. Each modem takes one measurement for each site every hour across all locations. All U.S. locations download the same list of sites in the KM10 – U.S. index. As a result, for every site in the U.S., there are 24 measurements every day times four carriers times four locations.

At the end of every week, all the measurements for each mobile site are aggregated across all locations and all carriers to give a unique value for that week. The mobile sites are ranked in terms of performance and the index is posted on the Keynote Web site. Keynote also publishes an Industry Index which is the aggregated value across all mobile sites, all locations and all carriers.
