Mars Rover Web Sites Stabilize, Reports Keynote
Dear
Industry Influencer: Below is a quote from Keynote’s
senior Internet analyst about the performance of the
two NASA sites we are measuring during the Mars Rover
mission. There is background below the quote to give
you some context and some information on Keynote’s
measurement infrastructure and performance indices.
We are available for interviews as well.
QUOTE
“The NASA sites related to the Mars Rover mission which
Keynote is measuring (http://www.nasa.gov/home/index.html and http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/home/index.html)
appear to have stabilized after yesterday's early
spikes in performance. The response times for Home Page downloads
are again well below 2 seconds with 100% success
rates for reaching the sites.”
“From 3pm PST yesterday to 3pm PST today, the
two sites had download times of 1.3 and 1.8 seconds
(NASA and JPL respectively). Compared to the Keynote
Government 40 Index numbers on which performance ranges
from sub-second responses up to eight or ten seconds,
the NASA sites have been very resilient in handling
the traffic associated with the Mars mission.”
“NASA is to be congratulated for its ability
to prepare for and handle the kind of load that it
did yesterday. Even though the sites Keynote is measuring
had some degradation of performance yesterday, they
were quickly stabilized and served content to visitors
in an efficient manner. These performance numbers reflect
very well on NASA’s use of the Web as a technology
focused entity of the government.”
Roopak Patel, Senior Internet Analyst, Keynote Systems
BACKGROUND
NASA sites are generally very resilient with Home Page
downloads occurring in less than 2 seconds.
That is not always the case with Government sites as
whole where performance tends to be less consistent.
As an example, our soon to be announced Keynote Government
Transaction Index (measuring a 3-step transaction)
has a completion time average of around 8 seconds with
success rate at 92%. Comparatively, NASA sites on the
Keynote Government Transaction index complete the transaction
in less than 6 seconds with 100% success rate.
NASA
is on the leading edge of technology when it comes
to Government sites as a whole. The performance of
the sites we are monitoring appears to show their effectiveness
in using the Web as a channel to communicate with the
public on interesting and relevant news - like the
Mars Rover images, the overall mission, the details
of the Mars probe, etc.
Some of the main focuses for
many Web site owners these days are site integrity
testing (making sure that pages
are consistent in their information and that there
are no broken links etc.) and usability testing (are
users able to go where you want them to go with ease).
The NASA folks seem to know their users when it comes
to the public facing sites and those sites work well.
Keynote
accesses Web sites exactly as an end user would from
locations around the country from our distributed
network of measurement computers.
Keynote information
Keynote is the global leader in Web performance measurement,
testing and management services that improve the quality
of e-business.
MEASUREMENT INFRASTRUCTURE
The foundation for Keynote’s services is an extensive
network of over 1,700 measurement computers that are
strategically located in over 120 locations connected
to the major Internet backbones and represent Internet
user populations in 50 metropolitan areas worldwide.
A sophisticated operations center collects, analyzes
and disseminates the real-time Web site performance
and availability data round the clock making it instantly
available to customers 24 hours a day through any standard
Web browser.
Web Performance Indices
Keynote has built the world’s largest variety
of Web performance indices that are considered and
used by enterprise companies as the ‘gold standard’ for
benchmarking Web performance against competitors and
for setting internal goals and metrics for performance
(including as part of MBOs), and for use in service
level agreements (SLAs) with a variety of providers.
Keynote’s page download and transaction indices
measure the responsiveness and availability of Web
pages and transactions on leading Web sites. Measurements
are made using Keynote’s global infrastructure
of over 1,700 measurement computers and taken 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week. Keynote regularly publishes the
results of its many indices on its own Web site (“Keynote
Web Watch) and in the pages of its publishing partners.
Keynote’s line-up of Web performance indices
currently include the following: Keynote Business 40
Internet Performance Index, Keynote Consumer 40 Internet
Performance Index , Keynote Government 40 Index, Keynote
Broker Trading Transaction Performance Index, Keynote
E-Commerce Transaction Performance Index and the Keynote
E-Banking Transaction Performance Index.
